Costa Rican labor law says employers must protect their employees in 2 ways:
Instituto Nacional de Seguros
Workers’ Compensation (INS) is paid by the employer and covers work-related accidents. This
benefit is issued as insurance and can be paid once or twice a year.
If an employer fails to protect his employees, he is responsible for any event which otherwise would
have been covered. The employer must keep INS informed of hires, firings, and other relevant
personnel information, and send INS all payroll information on a monthly basis.
Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS)
Social Security (“La Caja” or CCSS), which covers: sickness, pregnancy, and non work-related
accidents for the employee and his/her dependants.
The employer must present a monthly report with each employee’s information. This is paid by
both the employer and the employee. Usually, the employer includes the entire payment within the
salary. The payment is about 32% percent of the salary and must be done every month.
